September 01, 2025
Important Notice: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After this date, your Windows 10 PC will continue to operate, but it will no longer receive critical updates such as security patches and technical support that keep your system safe and efficient.
Why Business Owners Must Act Now
- Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your system becomes increasingly vulnerable to cyber attacks, malware, and viruses, putting your valuable business data at serious risk. Upgrading to a newer Windows version is essential to protect your assets.
- Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are designed to work with the latest operating systems. When Windows 10 support ends, some essential programs may malfunction or stop working entirely, disrupting your business operations.
- Regulatory Compliance Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or subject to strict regulations could face compliance violations by using an outdated OS, potentially leading to fines or legal complications. Staying updated helps you avoid these pitfalls.
Your Upgrade Options Explained
Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 devices meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11. Attempting to upgrade incompatible PCs will result in error messages.
If your device cannot run Windows 11, consider these alternatives:
- Purchase a new PC compatible with Windows 11
- Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for continued protection
- Switch to a Linux-based operating system
- Continue using Windows 10 past the deadline (not recommended due to risks)
Before proceeding with any option, always back up your data to safeguard your important files during the transition.
Extended Security Updates: A Temporary Solution
If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10, available for one year after October 14, 2025. Keep in mind, ESU is a short-term fix, not a permanent solution.
To access ESU, you can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points to register. Alternatively, you can opt for a free method by enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Note that OneDrive provides 5 GB free storage, but larger backups may require purchasing additional space.
Don't delay—register for ESU before the October 14 deadline to ensure continued security.
